More operators find out working with
CIBER UK pays off
December 2004 — More pub and club operators are turning to
CIBER UK, a proven market leader in tailored payroll services, to
find a cure for the admin headache of running the payroll.
It has signed new contracts with Yates Group, one
of the UK’s leading managed house chains, C-Side Holdings Ltd
and Leisure Xcel Ltd (formerly Lazi Leisure Ltd) - two companies that
run late licence outlets and clubs.
CIBER’s Business Development Manager Colin
Charlton said he was delighted with the new gains to the company’s
client list, which already includes Eldridge Pope, Wizard Inns (now
Pathfinder Pubs), and restaurant chains such as DPP (Deep Pan Pizza).
“We believe our team and systems are the best
in the business – featuring a mix of IPPM qualified payroll
staff with wide knowledge of legal compliance, and our own cutting
edge software to provide a complete solution,” said Colin.
He added: “We evaluate each clients’
payroll process before agreeing a solution. At the same time, we address
the core concerns of any business considering moving payroll administration
away from Head office – resilience, confidence that payroll
data is secure and accessible when it is needed.”
Ascent has almost 30 years’ experience providing
payroll services to public and private sector organisations and from
its Managed Service Centre in Billingham, Teeside, manages more than
£11 million in monthly BACS payments on behalf of clients.
The company’s expertise in payroll services,
process automation and the effective use of technology to provide
a payroll service designed to address the specific needs of companies
in the licensed trade, has won it a string of new business gains this
summer.
Yates first outsourced payroll responsibility to
CIBER in 2001 to free up management and admin time by ridding itself
of the burden of running payroll for its 3,500 staff.
It has now signed a new contract to extend what has
proved to be a successful business partnership.
Mark Jones, Yates’ CEO, said that outsourcing
essential but non-core activities, has allowed his management team
to concentrate on driving better value from the business and its assets.
Yates found that running payroll in a widely spread
estate, and in a market where staff turnover is very high, is not
only costly and time-consuming, but also a distraction for management
trying to focus on making each outlet as profitable as possible.
CIBER’s managed service solution has introduced
a simpler process for collecting payroll data, which was easier for
bar staff to use, and a better computation process at head office.
Yates’ Operations Finance Manager Mark Coverley
said: “With these improvements, and the outsourcing of the responsibility
of payroll processing to CIBER, this really means that the management
at head office, and the estate, can concentrate on running the business
without the worry of payroll deadlines.”
C-Side is Brighton’s premier leisure company
with 350 employees, and operates a range of venues including four
nightclubs, a string of pubs and bars and a restaurant in Brighton,
Portsmouth and Southampton.
C-Side’s Financial Director Tim Allen said
that he hadn’t considered outsourcing… until the need
to recruit new staff in Head Office Finance arose. Rather than recruit
he decided to shift the payroll burden to a specialist, and CIBER
gave him the double benefit of reduced overheads and improved service
to staff.
Allen said: “You can see from their client
list that they know our market and when you meet them to discuss your
own situation, they offer pragmatic advice on how improvements can
be made and operating costs reduced.”
CIBER were able to take over the payroll in under
five weeks from initial enquiry.
“I was impressed by the care and attention
taken to tailoring the service to my needs,” said Allen. “CIBER
work at understanding our issues – you are always hesitant doing
something like this for the first time.
“Our employees are our strength, our lifeblood. If any decision
I take had a negative impact on the staff, the business would suffer,
so my confidence in selecting CIBER, to ensure the transition went
smoothly, has been vindicated.”
Leisure Xcel Ltd had two key objectives in mind when
outsourcing payroll operations:
- They wanted to remove any reliance on key individuals for such
a critical back-office procedure. They considered management time
could be better spent on more commercially important business
areas.
- And they wanted to be able to record and share important data
easily and quickly, without the need for a large back office team.
Led by Dave Bell, the company has transformed the
operational management of its North East pub, bar and nightclub operations,
by implementing strong management controls.
Part of this transition involved shifting the non
core task of payroll administration out to CIBER, a key part of the
drive to minimise Head Office administration and keep costs to a minimum.
Since taking control of the business, a key priority has been establishing
robust administration to support staff working in the company’s
nine units – pubs, late-night bars, night clubs, restaurants
and a hotel.
Day-to-day back-office operations are managed by
Chris Hunter. He said: “Proof, if proof were needed, was seen
when summer holidays for key members in an already busy management
team over-lapped, and the payroll was one less thing to worry about.
One week into the process, CIBER had taken over responsibility and
the payroll deadlines were guaranteed.”
