New Management Team drive changes in pub & club estate

December 2004 — Leisure Xcel Ltd (formerly Lazi Leisure Group Ltd) led by Dave Bell has transformed the operational management of their north-east pub, bar and nightclub operations by implementing strong management controls. Part of this transition has involved shifting the non-core task of payroll administration out to established industry payroll provider CIBER UK.

Moving the payroll to an external professional body was a key part of the drive to minimise Head Office administration and keep costs to an absolute minimum. Since taking control of the business, a key priority has been establishing robust administration techniques to support the staff working in the bars & restaurants. Day to day back-office operations are managed by Chris Hunter, who illustrates the merits of moving the responsibility of meeting payroll deadlines when he recounts ….“Proof, if proof were needed, was seen when summer holidays for key members in an already busy management team over-lapped and the payroll was one less thing to worry about. 1 week into the process, CIBER had taken over responsibility and the payroll deadlines were guaranteed, with no experienced payroll staff working in Leisure Xcel”.

Leisure Xcel had two key objectives in mind when outsourcing their weekly and monthly payroll operations:

  1. Risk – they wanted to remove any reliance on key individuals for such a critical back-office procedure. They considered the level of management energy necessary to support the payroll administration impedes other more commercially important areas of the business.
  2. Economics – Leisure Xcel is focussed on providing comprehensive support services to their estate in the most cost effective manner. Consequently, strategic investments in deploying a proven infrastructure enables the recording & sharing of important data easily & quickly, without necessitating a large back office team.

Outsourcing the payroll administration is a logical extension of these investments and will deliver tangible cost savings whilst driving efficiencies by improved process.

Leisure Xcel operate 9 units comprising Pubs, late-night bars, night clubs, restaurants and a hotel between Newcastle, Sunderland and neighbouring Whitley Bay.”
